James F. Cummings, MD

President, Government and Public Health Solutions

Dr. Cummings is a Board Certified Infectious Diseases Physician who brings a 26-year career in the US Army and a proven track record in vaccine, drug and diagnostics development. Dr. Cummings served as Director of the Department of Defense’s Global Emerging Infectious Surveillance and Response System (GEIS), with Biosurveillance laboratories in 71 countries, the Director of Translational Medicine & Regulated Activities for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), and the Consultant to the Surgeon General for all medical research and development. Prior to joining ICON GPHS, Dr. Cummings served as Vice President of Clinical Development and Translational Medicine at Novavax, leading the development programs for all emerging & re-emerging Infectious Diseases, including Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza, Clostridium. difficile (C. diff), Ebola, Zika, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) caused by a coronavirus (CoV) and other novel pathogens.

Mark Polhemus, MD

Vice President Government and Public Health Solutions

Dr. Polhemus is an Infectious Diseases Physician with greater than 18 years experience as a clinical research investigator in global health and Infectious Diseases. Prior to joining ICON GPHS, Dr. Polhemus served as the Director of the Muriithi-Wellde Clinical Research Center for the US Army Medical Research Detachment in Kenya, Director of Malaria Vaccine Development at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Director of Medical Systems at the Pentagon, and Director of the Center for Global Health and Translational Science at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He has led vaccine and drug development efforts, as well as epidemiology and diagnostic evaluations for Leishmaniasis, Malaria, Rabies, Dengue, and Zika. He is currently Vice President of Global Operations and has responsibility for the clinical research activities of ICON Government and Public Health Solutions.

Caroline Forkin, MD

Senior Director of Global Research Services

Dr. Forkin brings 25 years’ experience in clinical, pharmaceutical and global health settings, including extensive experience in Africa. With a clinical background in Infectious Diseases, Caroline’s experience in Africa included senior roles as HIV/AIDS Advisor for both the World Bank and the Irish Government. These roles involved working with the Mozambican Ministry of Health, National AIDS Council, together with other global health entities such as the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Global Fund for AIDS, TB, and Malaria, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Dr. Forkin’s pharma experience prior to joining ICON includes country medical lead for two biotech companies. Her role at ICON is Senior Director for Clinical Research Services with responsibility for all our studies in Africa and the Middle East.
